According to the latest report from APEAL (The Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging), Europe’s steel packaging recycling rate reached a record 82.5% in 2023. This milestone underscores the enduring recyclability and sustainability of steel, particularly in forms such as tinplate packaging used widely in food, beverage, and personal care sectors.
The data, verified by independent third-party auditors, strictly aligns with the EU Waste Framework Directive. It only includes steel packaging that has actually undergone recycling, not just collected or sorted.
Alexis Van Maercke, Secretary General of APEAL, emphasized:
“We are not interested in materials that are merely thrown into a recycling bin. We focus on packaging that truly re-enters the production loop as secondary raw material.”
A significant share of this recycling success is attributed to tin packaging, a thin steel substrate coated with tin. Its high magnetic properties make it easy to separate during waste processing, contributing to exceptionally efficient recycling rates. From food cans to aerosol containers, tinplate remains one of the most circular materials in the packaging sector.
While the overall EU recycling rate is high, APEAL notes that substantial disparities exist between member states.
Van Maercke added:
“We see clear potential for further improvement across Europe. We aim to raise all national systems to the same high-performance level.”
APEAL continues to support industry-wide strategies such as design for recycling, sorting-friendly innovations, and public education campaigns. These efforts aim to boost recycling efficiency and enhance the sustainability profile of materials like tinplate packaging.
With stricter environmental regulations and growing demand for low-carbon materials, tinplate packaging stands out for its infinite recyclability and minimal resource loss. It is poised to play an increasingly central role in the future of metal packaging and the broader circular economy.
